MGMT1001 – PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT
Introduction
to the Course
Principles of Management (MGMT1001) is a core management
course that can be described as a very intense programme
of study. This course is an introduction to the study
of management theories and practices. Management is
discussed as a functional, problem-solving,
decision-making process that is geared toward the
effective and efficient accomplishment of organizational
goals. The course is designed around the three major
managerial tasks performed by the modern manager (James
Donnelly, 1990): (1) Managing Work and Organizations (2)
Managing People (3) Managing Production and Operations.
These three tasks are explained by reference to the core
functions of planning, organizing, leading and
controlling. Throughout the course, issues and cases
associated with management in the Caribbean context are
considered.

Student Goals and Commitment
It
is important that you understand your responsibilities
while pursuing this undergraduate course of study. You
should establish measurable and attainable goals from
week one, and focus on managing your time effectively.
You should discuss any difficulties with your lecturer
and/or tutorial leader at the earliest possible time.
Commitment to studying is essential in a semester
course, since it ends very quickly. Procrastination at
the beginning will end in too much work later on, and
you will have difficulty performing well. It is
essential, therefore, to develop a well structured study
programme, including a timetable.
